Flank Esports is a Turkish startup that focuses on being the ultimate source for people to catch up with latest schedules, watch live matches, read the latest news and even play Fantasy League based on the popular MOBA game League of Legends. Flank aims to accomplish these goals with a bit of socializing (chat & comments) and gamification (leaderboards, raffles, prediction awards).

Around March of 2018, we sat down with the team to re-design the whole experience with a few new features such as the store and fantasy league. One of the main reasons of the re-design was that the old design was fairly complicated to use because it wasn’t following most of the known UX best practices and there was a lot of room to improve the UI. Another important reason was that the UI wasn’t flexible enough to support upcoming games’ details such as Overwatch, CSGO and Dota 2 because the initial plan was to stick to League of Legends only.

Note: Even though I worked on both the mobile and web apps, this article will be focusing on key takeaways from the mobile app.

👋🏻 Onboarding

Since following esports is usually done based on particular games and teams, Flank aims to personalize experiences so your news feed is not flooded with stories that you're not interested in. Based on this goal, we thought the onboarding flow would be a great step to pick your favorite games and teams that you'd like to follow. Selecting your favorites beforehand lets us prioritize them when showing you content. At the last step of this 3 step flow, user is asked for permission to send notifications so we can notify you about match results and other important news.
